Three ways to measure this race
Three different ways to measure a race — and they often point to different drivers.
Official winner — Denny Hamlin (#11): where the car was at the checkered flag (P1). Led 40 laps with 14.30 average running position and 4,764 TLS points.
TLS leader — Carson Hocevar (#77): most position-weighted points across every scored lap (6,617 points). Finished P5 with 21 laps led and 5.08 ARP. TLS rewards running up front all afternoon, not only the final lap.
Best ARP — Chase Elliott (#9): lowest average running position (3.15). Finished P32 with 5,158 TLS points and 67 laps led. ARP is an average across all laps — a driver can run near the front all day yet score fewer TLS points if they led fewer laps, completed fewer laps, or lost ground late while keeping a strong average.
The checkered flag reflects who survived the final seconds. TLS reflects where drivers ran across the whole race. ARP tells you the typical running spot — but not who banked the most valuable laps.
Hamlin survives Michigan red flag
Cautions on laps 78 and 90 kept the FireKeepers 400 unsettled early. Chase Elliott (#9) won stage 2, but the race turned on lap 142 when Zane Smith (#38) brought out a caution — on the restart Elliott (#9) and Bell (#20) hit the wall hard enough to require a red flag for SAFER barrier repairs.
After a lap-154 restart crash when McDowell (#71) struck Noah Gragson (#4), Denny Hamlin (#11) took control and led the final 46 laps. Hamlin (#11) won by 11.11 seconds over Erik Jones (#43) — a rare blowout finish on a day defined by repairs and attrition.
